Who Is a Good Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
Teeth have tiny pores in them that absorb pigment molecules, so things like coffee, tea, red wine, and dark foods can cause discoloration over time. Professional teeth whitening products are highly effective on most extrinsic (on the surface of the enamel) and some intrinsic (inside the enamel) stains. During your consultation, we will determine if your specific stains tend to respond well to whitening products. We will also make sure your mouth is healthy enough for cosmetic services.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Teeth whitening products usually have carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide as their active ingredient. These formulas are designed to penetrate the enamel and break up pigment molecules.
Many different companies make teeth whitening products. In our office, Dr. Patel favors the Zoom! system from Phillips. It has a reputation for being highly effective and safe.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening
For take-home teeth whitening, we will send you home with a professional kit that you should use exactly as directed. Typically, this means applying a whitening formula to your teeth for a specific amount of time each day. You may notice a difference in your teeth after just a few days, but final results usually take about two weeks.
In-Office Teeth Whitening
In-office teeth whitening has the potential to brighten your smile by several shades in just one hour or so. After applying a protective barrier to your gum tissue, we will place the Zoom! formula on your teeth and activate it with a special light. We may rinse it off and reapply it a few times. We often recommend this service for patients who want to achieve results ASAP.
Tips for Maintaining Your Brighter Smile
Teeth whitening treatment will not prevent future dental stains. To maintain your results for as long as possible, you should:
- Eat a “white diet” for the first 48 hours after in-office teeth whitening. Basically, this means you should eat only white or minimally pigmented foods, like potatoes, bananas, milk, etc.
- Maintain an excellent daily oral hygiene routine.
- Moderate your intake of highly pigmented foods and beverages.
- Enjoy dark drinks, such as coffee and tea, through a straw to minimize their contact with your teeth.
- Do not smoke or chew tobacco.
- Visit us for periodic teeth whitening touch-ups.
